Ultimate tic tac toe

Ultimate tic-tac-toe is nine mini 3×3 boards arranged as one big 3×3. You play inside a mini-board; winning that mini claims that cell on the big board. The catch: your move usually sends your opponent to a specific next mini-board. First to win three mini-boards in a row on the big grid wins the match.

The board on this page is the ultimate layout — not a relabeled classic game. For plain 3×3, use home or 2 player.

When

When to use

You searched ultimate / “tic tac toe ultimate”; classic feels too short; you want a longer duel on one device.

When not

When not to

You want a 30-second classic game → home. You only need three-in-a-row rules → how to play. You came for never-lose theory on classic → how to win.

Defaults

Assumptions

Standard ultimate rules: send rule + mini-board wins feed the meta-board; if the target mini is finished, play opens to any open mini. Longer sessions than classic.

Steps

How

  1. Read which mini-board is active (highlighted).
  2. Place X or O in an empty cell of that mini.
  3. Your placement’s cell index usually chooses the opponent’s next mini.
  4. Finish a mini → that big-board cell is yours; line up three big cells to win.

Worked notes

Examples

  • You play in the center cell of the top-left mini → opponent is sent to the center mini next
  • You win the middle mini → the big board’s center cell shows your mark; chase a meta three-in-a-row

Watch-outs

Gotchas

  • Ultimate is not “one big 9×9 tic-tac-toe.” Mini wins matter.
  • Sending someone to a finished mini often opens the board — read the highlight.
  • Practice above while you learn the send rule.
